Well this guy doesn’t take to getting passed… as I roll by I hear the telltale sound of a shift and then the sound of tires being pressed into the pavement for all their worth. This old guy is trying to close back up on me… so I did what all petty little boys do… I ratchet up the speed a little, you know, to make it more fun. We roll along in lockstep, him about 5 meters or so behind me but keeping up just fine… then I slowly turn the screws a little more. It’s a mean thing to do I know, but I couldn’t help myself. I can hear him start to really huff and puff as we pass over 25 miles and hour and close in on 30. He finally broke off the pursuit and I started to glass crank (pedal gently) as I rode off listening for any unusual activity behind. I am a terrible person. I did look back when I was way far off to make sure the man wasn’t keeled over in the grass… Probably made his day to have a little impromptu race early in the morning.
Its quite pleasant riding into work through Plano’s extensive hike and bike path network. I can go 12 miles one way to work and not be on a major road for more than 1-2 miles total. I think I was 10 for 14 today in terms of Hi’s and Good Mornings… some days are much better than others. The pleasant weather always seems to bring out the people though so some days are better than others. Foggy cell phone pic to the left is all I have to show, sorry.(Sidenote… I started writing this before we got a week of rain…)
Back to School should have been the title of this blog entry… or how’s this for a working title… Max gets called up from the minors. You see, we now have all three kids going to the same school again. I like it. The boys can keep a close eye on the Crunch for us. ;]
One of their teachers has had both Luc and then Karah… and has already told Karah that she hopes she gets Max this coming year because she already has the chair set aside for him. It’s the same one that Luc and Karah have both sat in. I hope it’s not a chair in the corner… one that comes with a special hat. (update… she did get Max. See, I told you part of this was written and then backburnered for a few weeks. No word on the hat thing)
Naw, they are all doing really well right now and we have been really hustling with trying to get them ready for the new school year. Max is playing the Cello in Orchestra this year and that has required a little investigation on our part. I found him his own Cello for home use thanks to the internet. Not being a musically inclined lot, both Amber and I are excited that he is interested and are thinking its really going to work out for him. He has never played an instrument in his life and it was a surprise to us when the music director at his school last year said he had a really good ear. An exceptional ear if I recall correctly. This is all funny because if you know Max, you know that he almost always has a finger or two in his ears… he does it at movies, watching TV, sometimes even when he is sitting at the computer playing video games. I have even chuckled when looking over and seeing him sitting at the computer with headphones on and poking his finger up under the headphones to put in his ear. Lets just all agree that he has sensitive ears. So now he is going to play the Cello in his school’s orchestra.
Funny story about when we went up to their school the day before it started… you know, to put stuff in lockers and make sure they knew where they were going and stuff. When we were heading down the hallway heading for Max’s locker, I noticed that there were a lot of Fowler Band stickers on lockers. I jibe at Max, “where is your sticker Max?” Max looks at me dead straight and says… “Daaaddd, I’m not in Band, I am in Orchestra”. Well. From the tone of it, I can already tell that there is a hierarchy to these things. I will have to watch what I say going forward… ;]
Karah being the social creature that she is, was totally looking forward to school getting started again. And this was on the first day of summer break. Anyway, she was up there with us roaming the school this day before school starts and I could tell she was trying her hardest to make Max feel comfortable about the idea of middle school. Poor Max was just a ball of nerves. He does not like an unknown situation and going to a new environment had him pretty worked up. It didn’t help that we passed the Interrogation Room while walking around… at least that was what Max saw. We had to talk him down from the ledge and show him that it was actually the Integration Room and in fact had nothing to do with Interrogation. Funny kid.
My boss wants me to play golf with him in the coming week or two. He is coming off going a few rounds with chemotherapy and is just now feeling good enough to start swinging the clubs again. Should give me a chance to at least stay with him. Actually I am a little honored that he asked me to play. Went to hit balls (golf) the other night. I took Munchie with me to the closest driving range. She loved it and said she wants to get clubs to fit her. She heard about her cousin Jacob playing on his high school golf team and she thinks that sounds like a pretty good deal. She wants to be ready to play for her high school team. She has a couple of years so now would be a good time to start. Used the remainder of my Edwin Watts gift card (thanks Amber) and picked up a couple of Nike Junior irons for her. We will try to start hitting regularly once it stops raining.
Hope everyone is doing well. Catch up with you all soon.
